What is Antivirus? How antivirus software works?

Antivirus is software used to prevent, detect and remove malware , such as: computer viruses, malicious BHOs, hijackers, ransomware, keyloggers, backdoors, rootkits, trojan horses, worms, malicious LSPs, dialers, fraudtools, adware and spyware. Computer security, including protection from social engineering techniques, is commonly offered in products and services of antivirus software companies. This page discusses the software used for the prevention and removal of malware threats, rather than computer security implemented by software methods.

How antivirus software works
It identifies file patterns and file activity which indicates any kind of attack on the machine or any of its' stored files. It tries to fix any infected real file and to delete any file which is itself a virus or spyware. It places files in the vault before trying to fix them, then replaces them with the repaired file. Any file it can not delete it places in the vault. The vault is na area it sets as unable to run any program from when it is installed. This prevents them from going any harm. If the machine restarts and runs correctly with current files in the vault, empty it. Do NOT attempt to delete them, as your accessing them actually removes the protection. If there is a problem with the machine after an infection is stopped, these files may indicate where the problem is.
